On Saturday January 28, 2023, at approximately 12:21 P.M. Pacific Time, Troopers with the Nevada State Police, Highway Patrol Division, responded to a report of a vehicle crash on Interstate 80, near state mile marker 168 (county mile marker 4 in Humboldt County).
This location is approximately 8 miles west of Winnemucca.
Preliminary investigation determined that a tan Chevrolet SUV was traveling east on Interstate 80 in the right travel lane.
A white Peterbilt tractor/trailer combination commercial motor vehicle was traveling east on Interstate 80 in the right travel lane, in front of the Chevrolet. For unknown reasons the driver of the
Chevrolet hit the right rear of the commercial motor vehicle. The Chevrolet then drove off the right side of the roadway and subsequently overturned.
Unfortunately, the passenger, Leila Johnson (age 75) of Fallon, NV, was unrestrained and ejected from the vehicle. She succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene.
The driver was transported from the scene with suspected serious injuries.
The crash is being investigated by the Nevada Highway Patrol Northern Command East Multi-Disciplinary Investigation and Reconstruction Team (M.I.R.T.).
