Elerick wins 2A state wrestling championship

Lovelock has a new state wrestling champ.

Jeffrey Elerick is the third freshmen wrestler in Pershing County High School history to pull off the win. Many fans remember 2010, the year Brice Gorsline and Jared Jensen medaled as freshmen. Now, 13 years later, Elerick joins their ranks.

In 2010, Tom Brooks was coach. He passed the baton to his sons, Mike and Buzz. They’ve coached most of the high school wrestlers, including Elerick, since they were PeeWees.

“Jeffrey had a great tournament. He didn’t give up a single point in either of his first two matches but had a very challenging opponent in the final match,” said head coach Mike Brooks.

Elerick’s tournament started with the quarterfinal match against Joey Escobedo of West Wendover. Elerick won by major decision 12-0. He aced the semifinal match against Brekken Miller of Tonopah by tech fall at 16-0.

Elerick won the first-place match by pin over Jake Glasscock of Wells in the third period. The win was noteworthy since Elerick was 0-2 against Glasscock for the year. He lost to him at league duals and zone.

“I worked hard all week, was able to put it all together and came out with the win,” Elerick said.

Sophomore Wyatt Hughes (150) won the third-place match by pin over Thomas French of Wells in the third period

“Wyatt had a difficult semifinal match and lost to the eventual champion but battled back for third place, earning three pins at the tournament,” said Brooks.

Tavis Lawrence (126), Angelo Gibson (132) and Logan Hunt (215) also represented PCHS at the Winnemucca Events Center. Although they did not medal the coaches are proud of them for completing a year of the mentally and physically demanding sport.

“We are proud of all the kids. Although only two placed, they had a great season and competed to win each match. Thank you to the parents who supported us through the year and to all the fans who came to cheer at the state tournament,” said Brooks.
