Five Pershing County High School wrestlers represented their school at the Northern 2A Regional Championships on Saturday.

Pershing County High School hosted 68 wrestlers, their coaches and parents.

The schools included Battle Mountain, Yerington, Eureka, Coral Academy, Wells, Pershing County and Incline.

Battle Mountain won the team title with 216 points, followed by Herrington (147), Eureka (139), Coral Academy (113) and Wells (87). Pershing County was sixtrh with 72 points.

Jeffrey Elerick at 132 pounds and Logan Hunt (215) are freshmen. The two sophomores are Angelo Gibson (132) and Wyatt Hughes (150). Tavis Lawrence (126) is the team’s only senior.

All of Pershing County’s wrestlers placed fourth or better.

Now they qualify to compete at the state tournament this weekend at the Winnemucca Events Center.

Elerick, Hughes and Hunt placed second in their weight ranges. Lawrence placed third. Gibson finished fourth.

Elerick picked up two wins by pin on the day, while Hughes wrestled just twice, winning his first bout by pin over Wells’ Thomas French. Hunt wrestled twice as well, beating Incline’s Jose Ramirez.

“They have been working hard and using extra conditioning forms to help maintain high performance throughout their matches,” said coach Mike Brooks. “They haven’t experienced tournaments like this year’s state meet where it’s all divisions at once. It brings a lot more energy to the meet.”

The NIAA State Championships take place this Friday and Saturday at the Winnemucca Event Center.

Action gets under way at noon on Friday with the opening round of the 5A.

The other classes join at 12:40 p.m. and wrestling will continue through the day and evening. Wrestling resumes at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
