The Battle Mountain High School wrestling team added more hardware to its trophy case and continued to stay atop the Northern 2A, after winning the Northern 2A Regional Championship this past Saturday in Lovelock.
The Longhorns had seven individual champions on the day and won the team title with 216 points, followed by Herrington (147), Eureka (139), Coral Academy (113) and Wells (87).
Cruz Jimenez at 106 pounds, Sean Scherer (113), Liam Bundrock (120), James Spealman (126), Wyatt Madalena (150), Asher Bundrock (157) and Stone Whitlock (165) took home the top spot in their weight class.
Jimenez had just one match on the day and beat Yerington’s Eric Pineda 9-1 for the title.
Scherer did not have a match go past 46 seconds, as he opened with a 25-second pin over Riccardo Ramirez of Coral Academy and he beat Eureka’s Giovanni Berg in 46 seconds in the title bout.
Liam Bundrock began the day with a pin over Coral Academy’s Jack Meier in the first period and won the 120-pound weight class with a 13-5 win over Eureka’s Orlando Casas.
Spealman had three matches on the day and started with a 34-second pin over Dominick Ruiz.
He needed just 17 seconds to advance to the final after pinning Tavis Lawrence in the semifinals.
Spealman won his championship match by disqualification after being slammed twice by his Yerington opponent.
After a first-round bye at 150 pounds, Wyatt Madalena reached the final with a pin of Eureka’s Jaren Bludworth in the first period. In the final, he pinned Pershing County’s Wyatt Hughes.
Asher Bundrock had a first-round bye at 157 pounds and reached the final with a pin of Incline’s Aidan Midgley. In the championship, he beat Leonardo Guillen of Coral Academy.
Stone Whitlock earned two wins by pin at 165 pounds to win the weight class.
He won in 75 seconds in the semifinals over Coral Academy’s Esteban Mejia and beat another Coral Academy wrestler — Parker Corkrum in the final.
Ben George was second at 285 pounds, earning wins by pin over Incline’s Joshua Fragoso and Wells’ Vander Strong. George lost in the final to Yerington’s Floyd Thomas.
Aiden Ruggles (144) and Scott Wall (175) placed third for the Longhorns. Ruggles lost his semifinal match to Wells’ Tanner Hall and came back to beat Austin Leeb of Coral Academy for third.
Wall had three matches on the day, opening with a 55-second pin over Owyhee’s Kiowa Smart. He lost in the semifinals and came back to pin Yerington’s Ricardo Tamayo for third.
Ari Kyllonen was fifth at 138 pounds and Anthony Lopez-Hernandez placed sixth at 132 pounds.
The NIAA State Championships take place this Friday and Saturday at the Winnemucca Event Center. Action gets under way at noon on Friday with the opening round of the 5A.
The other classes join at 12:40 p.m. and wrestling will continue through the day and evening. Wrestling resumes at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
