Six to compete in regional wrestling tournament at PCHS this Saturday

Get ready for a big sports weekend at PCHS. Lovelock hosts the Northern 2A Regional Wrestling Championships on Saturday.

Six Mustang wrestlers hope to qualify for the state tournament in Winnemucca on Feb. 10 -11.

“The top four placers at regional qualify for state; same for the South to form an eight-man bracket,” explained coach Mike Brooks.

Wyatt Hughes, Jeffrey Elerick, Logan Hunt, Angelo Gibson, Tavis Lawrence and Xavier Weatherman hope to make the cut.

They’re a young team but have worked hard and racked up successes all season.

Hughes (157) represented PCHS as a freshman in Vegas last year. He battled hard but came short of medaling. Now he’s a sophomore and ready for another go. He placed fourth at the Cougar Bash this year and second in Sparks.

Elerick (138), a freshman, also had a winning season. He won first place at the Cougar Bash and McQueen in a tough bracket.

He also finished second at the Sparks Railroader. Elerick and Hughes enter the regionals as top two seeds.

Hunt (285), a freshman, competed in his first-ever competitions this year. He showed steady improvement all season and enters the regionals as the second or third seed depending on the entries.

Gibson (215), set himself up for a top four seed at the Battle Mountain duals last Saturday.

A high point of his season included going 3-0 at his Round Robin in Spring Creek. He also placed third in the Lovelock Invitational.

Lawrence (138), a senior, competed at the high school level for the first time and notched victories. He showed dedication and steady improvement in the demanding sport.

Weatherman (120), a junior, tallied six pins over two days at the Sparks Invitational to place third. He earned four straight pins at the Lovelock tournament for first place in his weight range, placed third at the Cougar Bash and fourth at the Vaquero Classic.

The team showed what they are capable of at the Yerington and Battle Mountain Duals this past week.

“We were happy with how the kids competed in Yerington. We were also happy with the results in Battle Mountain, although we dropped a couple of close individual matches,” said Brooks.

The season culminates at the Winnemucca Events Center on Feb. 10-11. Every wrestler on the team hopes to represent Lovelock. They invite their hometown to come watch them wrestle at PCHS this weekend.

They’ll compete against athletes from nine other schools starting at 9 a.m.
