The Lowry High School boys basketball team had its opportunities to pick up a pair of wins on the road last week but saw victories took away from them in Elko and Fallon.
The Buckaroos were in Elko on Tuesday, Jan. 24, and lost 54-50 to the Indians. Lowry made the trip to Fallon this past Friday and suffered a 55-46 loss to Churchill County.
The Buckaroos dropped to 7-11 overall, 1-5 in the Northern 3A East but are 5-0 against the Northern 3A West.
Against Elko, the Indians grabbed a seven-point lead, 18-11 on the first quarter, only to see the Buckaroos lead at halftime.
Lowry made a late run at the end of the first half and with the help of an Elko technical foul in the final seconds of the second quarter, Lowry led 25-24 at halftime.
The Buckaroos led for much of the third quarter, when the Indians converted a late rally of their own to lead 44-40 after three quarters of play.
Elko netted the first four points of the fourth quarter to go in front 48-40, when Jordan Bills knocked down his third 3-pointer of the contest to cut the gap to 48-43.
After a bucket by Elko, Anthony Guzman knocked down a 3-pointer to keep Lowry within four points at 50-46, only to see Elko answer again. Free throws by Lance Brinegar and a bucket by Dempsey Jenkins cut the lead to 52-50 with 90 seconds to play but those were the final Buckaroo points.
The Indians missed a free throw with 13 seconds left but got the rebound off the miss and made the ensuing bucket to hold on to the win.
Brinegar had a game-high 18 points, Jenkins added 11 and Bills nine. Isaac Danner had four points and two each for Justin Scott and Guzman.
Churchill County 55, Lowry 46
For the second game in a row, Lowry and Churchill County played down to the final seconds. The Buckaroos grabbed the early lead by as many as six points in the first quarter but Churchill County came back to lead 28-26 at halftime.
The Greenwave maintained the advantage throughout the third quarter at 39-35 and kept the Buckaroos at bay in the fourth quarter.
Brinegar connected on five 3-pointers and finished with 21 points.
Lowry traveled to South Tahoe on Tuesday and results were not available at press time. The Buckaroos host Dayton on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Fernley on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
Fernley leads the Northern 3A and South Tahoe is second. Elko sits in the third spot and Churchill County and Lowry both have 11 points but the Greenwave has the tiebreaker over the Buckaroos.
