Here’s to new beginnings. The Pershing County girls basketball team started league play this past week. 

On Tuesday, they hosted Sierra Lutheran. The Mustangs beat the Falcons with a final score of 56-18.

On Friday, Pershing traveled to Incline Village and defeated the Highlanders 60-14. Lovelock now stands at 9-0, overall, and 2-0 in the 2A Northern league.

“We look forward to a couple of road tests next week as we go on our overnighter against Battle Mountain and West Wendover,” said coach Lee Houston.

They’ll play rival school Battle Mountain on Thursday, Dec 21. 

On Friday they’ll challenge West Wendover.

The Sierra Lutheran Falcons are new to the 2A. They battled until the final buzzer but could not overcome the Mustangs’ offensive onslaught. 

The Mustang defense held the visitors to 18 points. A packed student section and spirited cheerleaders added to the lively atmosphere.

Raegan Burrows led the attack with 23 points, nine steals and five rebounds. Anna Happy had seven points with five rebounds and five assists. Yasmine McKinney added six points and five rebounds.

Taylor Garland scored four points with five steals, four rebounds and three assists.

Against Incline, Burrows scored 16 points, seven steals and five rebounds. 

Happy added nine points, eight rebounds, six steals and five assists. 

Riley Harvey contributed nine points, four assists, five rebounds and three steals. Kyra Cerini had eight points with six rebounds.

“The girls are playing with a different kind of confidence this year and it’s showing with the good start we’ve had. They are hungry to do great things together. They are so unselfish on the court, wanting each other to do well,” said Houston.
