Lowry brings home six individual champions, team title at Lovelock Mustangs Invitational

The Lowry High School wrestling team won the Lovelock Invitational this past Saturday with five first place winners. They included: Logan Jonas, Jhett Harber, Marcas Ricci, Luke Fentress and Kruz Gomez.

The Lowry High School wrestling team won the Lovelock Invitational this past Saturday with five first place winners. They included: Logan Jonas, Jhett Harber, Marcas Ricci, Luke Fentress and Kruz Gomez.

The Lowry High School wrestling team made the short trip to Lovelock on Saturday and came away with a dominating team victory at the Lovelock Mustangs Invitational.

Lowry led the way with 213 points, followed by Churchill County (165), Fernley (156), Spanish Springs (147.5) and Reno (129).

The Buckaroos’ Kruz Gomez at 113 pounds, Marcas Ricci (126), Jhett Harber (175), Luke Fentress (190) and Logan Jonas (285) won individual titles. 

Kaszin Gonalez was first for the Lowry Gold at 215 pounds in the JV division.

“There were several 3A teams there,, so we got to see how we are stacking up,” said LHS coach John Brooks. “We have a ways to go, but we can see the improvement.”

Gomez won his first three matches by first-period pins, including a 24-second match in the semifinals against Allan Ayala of North Valleys.

Gomez earned his title with a 10-6 win over Spanish Springs’ Record Hendricks. 

After a first-round bye at 126 pounds, Marcas Ricci won all four of his matches but score a boatload of points in the process. 

He opened with a 17-1 win over Evan Garcia of Churchill County and followed that up with a 24-8 tech fall against Reno’s Ethan Cota.

Ricci had to come from behind in a battle with Churchill County’s Andre Green in the semifinals. Green led 2-1 after two periods with the only point for Ricci coming on an escape. 

However, Ricci got a reversal and 3-point near fall at the start of the third period to lead 5-2. After a reversal by Green, 

Ricci came back with an escape and takedown to win the match. In the final, Ricci jumped out to a 6-2 lead against Sparks’ Kaiden Irwin and won the match 8-5.

Harber pinned his first two opponents to reach the semifinals at 175 pounds, where he used a 12-1 decision to beat Coral Academy’s Leonardo Guillen-Garcia. 

Harber needed just 71 seconds to pin Fernley’s Harley Denison to win the weight class.

After a first-round bye at 190 pounds, Fentress beat South Tahoe’s Luis Salas by pin in 80 seconds. In the semifinals, Fentress cruised to a 13-5 win over Fernley’s KeShawn Love and in the final, Fentress pinned South Tahoe’s Owen Earl.

Jonas reached the semifinals with a forfeit win and a pin over Reed’s Devin White. 

Jonas took down Carson’s Carlos Harris in just 40 seconds in the semifinals and pinned North Valleys’ Brandon Beck for the title.

Gonzalez won his title for the Lowry Gold at 215 pounds, using three pins in the process. 

He won the weight class when North Valleys’ Fausto Truillo Ramriez could not continue due to injury.

Dante Bautista at 150 pounds and Giovanni Monroy (175) placed second for the Lowry Gold and Brogan Atkins (175) finished third.

Pete Bengochea at 106 pounds and Chris Gildone (150) earned runner-up finishes for the Lowry varsity.

Bengochea opened with a pin in 70 seconds over Douglas’ Danzig Schroeder and followed that with an 11-1 win over teammate Edward Jones. 

Bengochea reached the final with a pin over Los Gatos’ James Price but lost in the final to Fernley’s Camron Mcmackin.  

Gildone reached the finals after a 7-2 win over McQueen’s Brevin Curtis and a pin against Yerington’s Mason Alarcon. Gildone lost in the final to Los Altos’ Teddy Smith.

Jayden Howard at 132 pounds and Isaac Dini (JV) at 190 each placed fourth for the Buckaroos. 

Lowry is back in action on Dec. 28-29 in Reno for the Sierra Nevada Classic.
