After a slow start to the season, the Lowry High School boys basketball team is starting to find its way under the direction of new head coach Jesse Zamudio.
Zamudio led the Lowry girls basketball team to a state title in the 2021-22 season and took over for Nate Green, who stepped down after one year of coaching the Buckaroos.
Lowry extended its winning streak to four games to improve to 5-3 with three victories this past week.
The busy week began on Tuesday, Dec. 12, in Nixon, where the Buckaroos doubled up Pyramid Lake 66-33.
Dempsey Jenkins and Matthew Casalez led the way for Lowry with 12 and 10 points, respectively. In all 10 players scored for the Buckaroos.
Kasyn Garner added nine points, while younger brother Kayd Garner netted eight points.
Jack DeLong contributed seven points and Austin White and Zaq Growcock scored six points each.
Jaden Jimenez finished with four points, ReiCyan Grau three and Conner Nelson one.
This past weekend, Lowry made its way to Susanville, Calif., for the Super 8 Classic. The Buckaroos were scheduled to play three games but a team dropped out at the last minute, leaving Lowry with two contests.
Lowry faced host Lassen on Friday and came away with a 49-48 win on the strength of free throws by Kasyn Garner at the end.
The game was tight throughout, with the Grizzlies leading 22-20 at halftime.
The Buckaroos tied the contest at 35 after three quarters of play and got the winning free throws late in the game.
On Saturday, Lowry cruised to a 52-29 win over Quincy, Calif., to round out the tournament.
Lowry was back on the road Wednesday to play South Tahoe and results were not available at press time.
With the new scheduling and playoff format, the game is a non-conference match-up.
Right after Christmas, Lowry will head for southern Nevada and the Mesquite Holiday Madness tournament in Mesquite at Virgin Valley High School.
Lowry is scheduled to play Lincoln County, Virgin Valley and White Pine.
