How Nevadans can avoid health insurance scams this Open Enrollment

Scams are easy to fall for - and most of us have fallen victim at some point or another. Open Enrollment for health insurance - happening now through 1/15 - is one of the most high-risk targets for scams.

Scammers will often disguise themselves as insurance brokers or insurance providers which could result in financial loss or identity theft if they get ahold of confidential information provided to them.

NevadaHealthLink.com is offering tips on how Nevadans can avoid scams:

• Read the fine print: NevadaHealthLink.com is the official and only website selling Affordable Care Act plans in Nevada: companies may use domains to throw consumers off, such as “nvhealthcare.org,” “obamacare-registration.org,” and obamacare-enroll.org” - these are NOT qualified and certified ACA plans, despite messaging on their website.

• Do not ever give your personal information over the phone such as your social security number or banking information. Nevada Health Link has over 700 qualified brokers and 7 navigator entities - but they will NEVER call you unsolicited. You know your broker and will only be contacted by someone who you have selected to work with.

• Never pay for enrollment assistance: Free enrollment assistance is provided to all Nevadans shopping on the Exchange. If a “broker” is offering to help enroll you in a plan for a small fee, they now may have access to your bank account.

• Know what’s covered: All plans on NevadaHealthLink.com include the 10 essential health benefits - in fact, they are required to, ensuring these are robust and full-coverage plans. Many scam plans are marketing for low-cost premiums, but these are skimpy plans with limited coverage. Nevada Health Link is the ONLY place Nevadans can qualify for financial assistance to lower the cost of premiums.
