The Pershing County High School wrestling team competed at multiple locations this past week. Three went to the Cody Louk Invitational at the Winnemucca Events Center.

The rest of the team traveled to Reno. Eleven participated in the McQueen JV tournament at Robert McQueen High School.

Two wrestled in an all-girls competition at Reed High School.

“We’re proud of every kid who puts their toe on the line. Some of them are experienced and some are just starting their journey,” said coach Mike Brooks. “We’re excited to have them. We’ve had low numbers the last few seasons. It’s been great to have the numbers up and have energy in the practice room.”

Angelo Gibson (144) and Wyatt Hughes (165) finished third in their weight classes.

At McQueen, Israel Knight (144) placed second. Jake Trowbridge (215) finished third in his weight class.

Justin Carruth (132), Ashton Jimenez (138), Braxson Bird (144), Samael Diarte (150), Cade Liebsack (150), Preston Anderson (157), Howard Mitchell (165), Logan Hunt (215) and Lovelock newcomer Zander (Soup) Bishop (285) also competed. Bishop got his first pin.

At Reed, Kimberley Trowbridge (130-136) placed second. Magdalena Ramirez (130-139) finished fifth in her weight class.

They competed in the Nevada Queens Tournament, the first girls-only held in Nevada.

Sixty-five girls from over a dozen schools competed, a sure sign the sport is gaining popularity among female high school athletes.

“It was great and I look forward to attending another all-girls tournament,” said Ramirez.

On Saturday, PCHS hosts the Lovelock Invitational starting at 9 a.m.
