Gomez, Ricci, Gildone win titles at Cody Louk Invitational

The Lowry High School wrestling team found itself back atop the standings at the Cody Louk Invitational, winning the tournament his past weekend in Winnemucca with 228 points.

Douglas was second with 192 points, followed by Spring Creek (161), Carson (155) and Spanish Springs (154.50).

The Buckaroos had three champions crowned in Kruz Gomez at 113 pounds, Marcas Ricci (126) and Chris Gildone (150).

Gomez was on the mat for just 92 seconds in his first matches, as he pinned Coral Academy’s Giovanni Curitti in 18 seconds and Battle Mountain’s Dani Madalena in the quarterfinals. 

Gomez collected a 14-6 win over Spring Creek’s Bradley Bauman in the semifinals and he pinned Douglas’ Gunnar Bleeker with six seconds left in the second period to win the weight class.

Ricci pinned Galena’s Manakai Kim and Damonte Ranch’s Benjamin Powrning to advance to the semifinals.

Ricci pinned Wooster’s Matthew O’Brien to reach the final and he won their weight class with a 11-6 win over Tonopah’s Dustin Otteson.

After a first-round bye, Gildone went on to win all four of his matches by fall. He knocked off Damonte Ranch’s Austin Rader and Coral Academy’s Aron Alvarez to reach the semifinals. 

In that round, Gildone pinned Yerington’s Mason Alarcon in the third period and did the same to Douglas’ Kolton Zinn in the finals.  

Pete Bengochea at 106 pounds and Luje Fentress (190) earned runner-up finishes for the Buckaroos.

Bengochea had just three matches in the small 106-pound weight class, pinning Yerington’s Cesar Ramirez and teammate Edward Jones. He lost in the final to Carson’s Jesse Oliva by a 14-9 decision.

Fentress had a total of five matches and moved into the quarterfinals with pins of Lowry teammate Isaac Dini and Spanish Springs’ Vance Whitt. Fentress defeated Reno’s Eli Sellers 7-2 and got by Douglas’ Aaron Tekansik 3-2 in the semifinals. 

Lowry’s Chris Gildone keeps Damonte Ranch’s Austin Rader on the mat in a 150-pound weight class match at the Cody Louk Invitational. Gildone won the weight class.

Fentress secured a takedown in the first period to lead 2-1 and increased the advantage to 3-1 with and escape in the second period. He lost to Reed’s Jonathan Eubanks in the finals. 

Jhett Harber (175) and Jake Bauman each placed third for Lowry.

Harber advanced to the championship semifinals with pins over Spanish Springs’ Tristan Spencer and South Tahoe’s Aiden Bacon. 

Harber was knocked off in the semifinals but came back with wins over Reno’s Jackson Sellers and Carson’s Jeffery Heaton.

Bauman was one the busiest Lowry wrestlers with seven matches over the two days. He won by pin in his first matches but was defeated in the quarterfinals. 

He came back through the consolation bracket to win four times and claimed third place with a pin over Reno’s Owen Layfield.

Edward Jones collected two wins to finish fourth at 106 pounds for the Buckaroo’s Gold Team. 

Billy DeLong at 157 pounds and Logan Jonas at 285 each placed sixth.

Jayden Howard (132), Bradyn Snyder (138), Urijah Davis (144), Maddox Hislop (144) and Alessondro Huerta also picked up wins for Lowry Blue.  

Lowry travels to Lovelock on Saturday.
