Pershing County athletes win league, state and special awards

On Tuesday, Nov. 28, a sizable portion of Lovelock gathered in the high school auditorium. 

They came to see the fall sports athletes receive recognition from their coaches and league.

Cece Thornhill called each cheerleader to the stage. She had special words for each girl, including her daughter Kaylah Hanley who graduates this spring. 

A highlight of their season was cheering at the championship football game at Allegiant Stadium.

Faith Moreira and Buzz Brooks introduced the JV volleyball and football teams.

They spoke about each player's contribution to the season, shook hands and hugged. Coach Moreira gave special awards to Alexa Watson (Coach's Award), Hayley Montes (Most Improved), Whitlee Diaz (Hardest Working) and Jaymie George (Sportsmanship). 

Next, Monica Halverson gathered the varsity girls. They each received a certificate, varsity letter and pin. Yasmine Mckinney, a senior, earned the Coach's Award. 

The Mustang Award went to Aaliyah Allen, a junior.

The volleyball players also earned multiple league awards. 

The 2A coaches named Raegan Burrows the Offensive Player of the Year. 

Anna Happy made the 1st Team.  Arya Garland, the only freshman on the list, earned an Honorable Mention.

Burrows and Happy were also named to the 1st Team, All-State.

Mike Brooks introduced the varsity football team. They finished the season as state runners-up and league champions.

Football players Logan Hunt, Jeffrey Elerick, Wyatt Hughes, Landon Smith, Conner Fecht, Bryce Gottschalk, stand onstage with coaches JJ Meyers, Jared Jenson and Mike Brooks.

Brooks gave the Cody Gibson Memorial Special Teams Award to Conner Fecht, a senior. 

Taylor Montes earned the Robbie Weagent Outstanding Underclass Lineman Award.

The 2A coaches named Tyrn Sam the All-League Player of the Year.  

Offensively, Izayuh McGlothin (RB), Travis Donaldson (QB), Brian Kauvaka (OL), Kaden Chambers (OL) and Aaron Kienbaum (WR) made the 1st Team, All League. Trenton Rhodes(RB) made the 2nd Team.

Honorable Mentions went to Taylor Montes (TE) and Daniel Jimenez (OL).

Defensively, Brian Kauvaka (DL), Trenton Rhodes (LB), Izayuh McGlothin (DB), and Aaron Kienbaum (DB) earned 1st Team All-League Awards. 

Kaden Chambers (DL), Bryce Gottschalk (DL), and Luis Sanchez (DB) made the 2nd Team. Denzel Zaldivar walked off with two Honorable Mentions (DB, returner).

First-team All-State Awards went to Aaron Kienbaum (WR), Izayuh McGlothin (RB,DB), Tyrn Sam (FB,LB), Brian Kauvaka (OL, DL) and Trenton Rhodes (LB).

Second Team Awards went to Kienbaum (DB), Kaden Chambers (OL) and Travis Donaldson (QB).

Parents, siblings and athletes now look forward to the wrestling and basketball seasons, already underway.
