It was a busy three days for the Battle Mountain High School boys basketball team to open the season this past weekend at the Serpent Classic in Hawthorne.
The Longhorns, who feature four freshman, one sophomore, two juniors and four seniors picked up three wins in five games.
Smith Valley 71,
Battle Mountain 68
In the first of two games on Thursday, Nov. 30, Battle Mountain dropped the season-opener 71-68 to Smith Valley.
Freshman Geovanni Ruvalcaba led the way for the Longhorns with 19 points, four assists, three steals and three rebounds.
Blake Stuart added 13 points, six assists and four steals and Zayne Hall contributed 11 points, two assists and one steal.
Adan Nevarez grabbed 11 rebounds to go with six points and three assists and Brodie Smith netted nine points and two assists.
Battle Mountain 65, Coleville 27
In the second game on Nov. 30, Battle Mountain bounced back in a big way with a 65-27 win over Coleville, Calif.
The Longhorns had four players in double figures, Ruvalcaba (16), Stuart (13), Nevarez (11) and Perrone (10). Ruvalcaba added nine assists, Perrone and Nevarez had seven and five rebounds, respectively, and Nevarez finished four steals.
Hall scored six points, Smith three and Daniel Andrade, Chase Lutz and Chase Baum had two points apiece.
Bishop Union 63, Battle Mountain 58
In its first game on Friday, Battle Mountain took on Bishop Union, Calif., and lost 63-58.
Ruvalcaba (21) and Stuart (18) combined for 37 of the 56 points by the Longhorns. Nevarez and Lutz contributed six points each and Andrade had five points.
Nevarez grabbed seven rebounds to go with three assists and Ruvalcaba has six assists and three rebounds. Stuart added four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Battle Mountain 69, Sparks 32
In the second game on Friday, Battle Mountain had no trouble with Sparks of the Northern 3A, leading 41-18 at halftime.
The Longhorns held the Railroaders to single digits in every quarter. Battle Mountain finished the second half on a 28-14 run.
Stuart led the way with 16 points and three rebounds and Hall joined him in double figures with 12 points, three assists and one rebound.
Smith, Nevarez and Ruvalcaba each scored nine points, Lutz and Baum each netted five points and Lewis Strong scored two points. Ruvalcaba added nine assists and three steals.
Battle Mountain 61, Mineral County 45
In the final game of the tournament on Saturday, Battle Mountain rolled past host Mineral County 61-45.
Nevarez paced the Longhorns with 19 points and Stuart and Hall contributed 17 and 10 points, respectively.
Battle Mountain travels to Smith Valley this weekend for a second preseason tournament.
