The Lowry High School girls basketball team continued its busy start to the season with four more games in Reno and Sparks this past weekend at the Winter Tip-Off Tournament.
The Lady Bucks opened up on Thursday with a 56-28 win over Galena at Reno High School. Lowry moved over to Spanish Springs High School on Friday and suffered its first loss of the season, dropping a 57-38 contest to Bishop Manogue.
The Lady Bucks beat Lassn, Calif., 55-17 in their first game on Saturday and lost to Spanish Springs 52-39. Lowry is now 6-2 on the season.
Lowry 56, Galena 28
Lowry junior Britain Backus equaled the total of Galena with 28 points, which included three 3-point field goals. She added six steals, six rebounds and an assist. Savannah Stoker added 19 points, eight rebounds and two steals.
The Lady Bucks used a 26-9 run in the second quarter to break the game open to lead 42-16 at halftime.
Lowry held Galena to 12 points in the second half, including a 12-3 spurt in the third quarter.
Bryce Brinkerhoff added seven points, two steals and two assists and Katlyn Gomez finished with two points.
Bishop Manogue 57, Lowry 38
Two of the best girls teams in Northern Nevada got together on Friday at Spanish Springs High School. Bishop Manogue was the Northern 5A Regional champion last year and Lowry is the two-time reigning 3A state champion.
The Miners led 13-10 after eight minutes of play, but used a 14-7 run in the second quarter to lead by 10 points. Bishop Manogue pulled away in the fourth quarter, outscoring Lowry 14-6.
Backus (18) and Stoker (16) combined for 34 of the 38 points.
Stoker added 10 rebounds, five steals and a block and Backus five rebounds, two blocks and two assists.
Khloe Shorey and Natalee Formby each scored two points and had three rebounds.
Lowry 55, Lassen 17
In Lowry first game on Saturday, Lowry jumped out to a 19-2 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. The Grizzlies scored 11 of its 17 points in the second quarter. The Lady Bucks outscored the Grizzlies 18-4 in the second half.
Stoker with 22 points and Backus with 18 each outscored Lassen by themselves.
Stoker, a senior, added nine rebounds, six assists and five steals. Backus had three assists and three steals.
Maura Braatz and Brinkerhoff netted four points apiece, Shorey two and Audry Mason one point. Shorey added eight rebounds and a steal.
Spanish Springs 52, Lowry 39
In the final game of the tournament, Lowry took on Spanish Springs, who is coach by 1993 Lowry graduate Art Cardenas.
The Cougars got the best of the Lady Bucks, winning 52-39.
The Cougars led 31-28 at halftime but came out in the third quarter with a 13-5 run to pull away for the victory.
Stoker paced Lowry with 16 points, eight rebounds, six steals, two assists and two blocks. Stoker now has 1,538 career points and is looking to become the ninth player in history to score 2,000 points in state history.
Backus added 10 points, nine rebounds and two assists.
Brinkerhoff contributed seven points, three rebounds and two assists. Autum Sanchez scored three points and Shorey two.
The schedule doesn’t get any easier for Lowry, who travels to Pyramid Lake on Tuesday, Dec. 12 for a 5:30 p.n. tip.
The Lakers won the 1A state championship last year.
Lowry hosts North Valleys on Saturday, Dec. 16, at 2:30 p.m.
The Lady Bucks ended the Panthers season a year ago in the semifinals of the regional tournament.
