The Pershing County High School girls soccer team started the 2023 season with a pair of away games against White Pine and West Wendover.
They lost to White Pine 3-0 but coach Kelly Brooks said the Ladycats scored the goals off fixable mistakes.
"We now have a better idea of our strengths and weaknesses as a team. We will be looking to be a more cohesive unit, especially between the defense and midfield," she said.
On Saturday, the Mustangs beat West Wendover 6-2, with four goals from Yasmine Acosta and two from Lexie Portillo. Lily Burt made good decisions as goalie according to the coach, resulting in multiple saves.
"The girls have worked really hard so far this season so it was rewarding to see them play together as a team and turn that hard work into big goals," Brooks said.
On Tuesday, Sept. 5. the Mustangs hosted Fernley for their first home game of the year.
On Wednesday, Sept. 6, they welcomed the Dayton Dust Devils. Results were not available at press time.
On Sept.12 the girls begin a string of road games, starting with Lowry (Sept. 13), Elko (Sept. 22) and Battle Mountain (Sept. 23).
They'll be back on their home field Friday, Sept. 29 at against White Pine. The game starts at 2 p.m.
