Eleven teams from northern Nevada, Wyoming and Utah gathered in Winnemucca Aug. 16-18 to compete in the annual Mine Safety Olympiad. The event tests mine rescue team members on emergency skills including rope rescue, emergency medical treatment, fire, confined space and hazardous materials, among others. In the field day scenario on Friday, Nevada Gold Mines Carlin took home first place in B Flight, with Sisecam won second place, and KHBM - Robinson won third place. In A Flight, Rio Tinto - Kennecot took home first place, Kinross Bald Mountain got second place and Kinross Round Mountain got third place. Rio Tinto Kennecot also took home the first-ever Grand Champion award. All of the scenarios featured actors/patients in realistic make-up and simulated emergency situations. Participating teams included Thunder Basin, Sisecam, NGM Carlin, Rio Tinto Kennecot, Coeur Rochester, NGM Phoenix, KGHM Robinson, NGM Cortez, SSR Marigold, Kinross Bald Mountain, Kinross Round Mountain, and a team made up of alternates. NGM's Turquoise Ridge hosted and organized the event.
