Lady Longhorns begin new season in Ely


The Battle Mountain High School volleyball team hit the road to eastern Nevada and Ely this past weekend to begin its 2023 season at the White Pine Invitational.

The Lady Longhorns won one of four matches in pool play on Friday.


Tonopah def. BMHS 25-22, 25-23

Battle Mountain took on Tonopah on the Central 1A and the Muckers came away with a 25-22 and 25-23 win.

Lindsey Bleak had a team-high three kills and three aces and Thalia Gonzalez, Asier Iturriaga and Kelcee Robey added two kills apiece. Galileah Benavides and Stevlana Martinez contributed two aces apiece. Robey had five digs and Gonzalez, Bleak and Kyandra Perez each had three digs.


White Pine def. BMHS 23-25, 25-25, 15-5

Battle Mountain took on host White Pine and grabbed the opening set 25-23. However, the Bobcats bounced back to win the final two sets 25-23 and 15-5.

The Lady Longhorns finished with 11 aces in the match, five coming from Gonzalez and three and two, respectively from Perez and Bleak. Robey and Perez each had three digs.


BMHS def. Lincoln County 18-25, 25-23, 15-9.

Battle Mountain dropped the opening set to Lincoln County of the Southern 2A but bounced back to win the second set 25-23 and third 15-9 for its first win of the season.

Bleak had five kills and three aces, while Benavides finished with five kills. Robey and Martinez each had four kills, Iturriaga three and Gonzalez two. Robey had a team-high three aces and Gonzalez and Martinez had two aces each.

Battle Mountain collected 38 digs, led by Bleak (nine) and Robey (eight). Benavides added six digs and Iturriaga and Perez finished with five digs apiece.


West Wendover def. BMHS 25-18, 25-19

In a preview of a league matcher later in the year, West Wendover knocked off Battle Mountain in two sets. Martinez and Bleak finished with four and three kills, respectively. Heidy Amezcua and Robey had three aces apiece and Bleak had three digs.


Lincoln County def. BMHS 24-18, 25-12

On Saturday, Battle Mountain took on Lincoln for a second time, with the Lynx winning in two sets.

Benavides finished with three kills and three digs and Benavides, Bleak and Robey each had five digs.

Battle Mountain is at home this weekend for a two-day tournament.
