Just one week before school resumes in Humboldt County, the Nevada Department of Transportation will be closing the bridge on Hanson Street in order to resurface the state route. The closure will result in detouring 12,000 motorists who utilize the overpass daily to just two alternate crossings at Bridge Street and East Winnemucca Boulevard. There are no plans from NDOT to relieve stress on the four-way stop near the railroad tracks (Bridge Street and Haskell), such as additional traffic controls during peak commute times.
According to a press release from NDOT, the bridge is slated for closure starting Monday, Aug. 14 (school begins Monday, Aug. 21) and Hanson Street will be fully closed between Sixth Street and Grass Valley Road through Aug. 28.
During the week of Aug. 28 and through Sept. 22, Hanson Street will be closed to eastbound traffic between Winnemucca Boulevard and Grass Valley Road from 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. weekdays. Traffic will be allowed traveling westbound toward West Winnemucca Boulevard. NDOT officials said passenger cars will detour via Bridge Street and heavy commercial truck traffic will detour to Winnemucca Boulevard.
At least one access to business and residential driveways will remain available during construction, with brief access interruptions as paving takes place directly in front of driveways.
NDOT said that travel across intersections — including the Sixth Street intersection with Hanson Street — will periodically be closed as intersections are reconstructed and new road surface placed.
The project will resurface approximately a half mile of Hanson Street from Winnemucca Boulevard to Grass Valley Road/Haskell Street. More than three inches of aging asphalt surface will be removed and replaced with new asphalt for a smoother drive. More extensive excavation will take place on Hanson Street near the railroad crossing, and the Hanson Street bridge over the railroad tracks will be resurfaced and improved.
The roadway has not been fully resurfaced in recent decades. The resurfacing will not only help preserve the roadway, but will provide a smoother, safer drive for the many as 12,000 motorists who travel the road daily. The project is part of NDOT’s long-standing pavement preservation system to resurface and preserve state roads.
In coming years, NDOT also plans to resurface and improve sections of Winnemucca Boulevard, as well as make improvements to accessibility on certain sections of Winnemucca state roads.
Motorists should use caution while traveling through work zones, and take alternate detour routes, if possible. The schedule is subject to change due to weather or other factors. For the latest state highway conditions, visit nvroads.com or call 511 before driving.
