Esquivel wins medalist honors at home tournament

After nearly a month off, Mother Nature greeted the Lowry High School boys golf team and the rest of the Northern 3A with cool and windy conditions at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course on Monday, April 17.

Despite the tough conditions, a pair of golfers shot 79 on the day. 

Lowry’s Landon Esquivel knocked off Fernley’s Jacob Holmes in a one-hole playoff, after the two tied for the low round of the day. 

Fernley’s Noah Davis was third overall with a round of 82.

Fernley won the tournament with a four-man score of 341, while Truckee was second at 353. Elko (367), Lowry (376) and South Tahoe (381) round out the top five.

Churchill County was sixth with a score of 403, followed by Spring Creek (416) and Dayton (454).

After Esquivel’s 79, Coda Nichols shot 98 for the Buckaroos and AJ Mendoza carded a 99. 

Hector Rivera and Jack DeLong each shot 100 and Wade Mori finished with a 110.

Buckaroos finish fifth in Fallon

Lowry and Northern3A made their way to Fallon on Tuesday, April 18, and were greeted with cold conditions as well.


Truckee grabbed the team title in Fallon with a 337, Fernley was second at 353 and Elko (373) placed third. Churchill County (386) and Lowry (388) rounded out the top five.


South Tahoe (406), Spring Creek (407), North Valleys (434) and Dayton (454) completed the team scores.


Truckee’s Luke Brown was the low medalist with a round of 77 and Holmes was second at 82. Truckee’s Reed Looper and Drew Drollinger each shot 85 to tie for third.


Esquivel led the way for Lowry with a round of 87 and Rivera carded a 97. DeLong finished at 101 and Nichols (103) and Mori (109) rounded out the scores for the Buckaroos.


The Northern 3A doesn’t conduct a regional championship and the three teams spots for the state championships are decided by the final regular season point standings.


Fernley leads the Northern 3A with 32.5 points and Truckee (31.5) and Elko (26) hold the second and third spots. 


South Tahoe (23) is fourth and Lowry sits in fifth with 19 points.


The Northern 3A was back in action on Monday and Tuesday in Spring Creek and Elko and results were not available at press time.


The regular season concludes on Monday, May 1, in Genoa Lakes for the South Tahoe tournament and Tuesday, May 2, at Sierra Sage GC in Reno for the North Valleys tournament.


The NIAA State Championships take place May 16-17 at Toiyabe GC in Washoe Valley.
