Celebrating young readers

Grass Valley Elementary School held its annual reading week with a Peter Pan and Neverland theme.

“All children, except one, grow up,” Peter Pan, by JM Barrie. Staff members at Grass Valley feel privileged to help their students grow up with a love of reading, and one of the ways they do that is by celebrating Reading Week. This year’s theme for GVES’s Reading Week was Peter Pan, and was celebrated during the week of April 17th – 21st. Students and staff celebrated dress up days such as Color War Day, dress up as your favorite book character day, dress as a pirate day, dress young or old day, and dress like a star day. Students were able to make a book mark featuring their favorite book; which was then entered into a contest for the best decorated book mark. One book mark winner was chosen from each grade. Students decorated their classroom doors, listened to mystery readers, answered trivia questions, and each classroom had a visit from a guest reader. Staff members joined in on the fun by decorating the alcoves around their classrooms. Winners of the best alcove were chosen, and this year it was Ms. Estes and Mrs. Rose.

Literacy Night was held on Tuesday, April 18th, and students were able to make hook hands, crocodile cookies, parrots, and tinfoil boats (which they then floated in water and added pennies to in order to see how many their boat could hold before sinking.) The record was 122 pennies! Students were also able to fish for books in the fishing pond.

Students and staff had a great time celebrating Reading Week, and are already looking forward to next year’s Harry Potter themed Reading Week.

'Reading In Robes' at Winnemucca Grammar School

Judge Michael Montero visited students at the Winnemucca Grammar School on April 13 to read books.

'Reading in Robes' was a Tier One event presented by Site Coordinator Yessenia Gomez with Communities In Schools of Northeastern Nevada.

Students were read to by Sixth Judicial Distict Judge Michael Montero, and also had a "Dress for Success" day, where students got to dress up as what they wanted to be when they grew up. Judge Montero read a book to our students and gifted books to the WGS school library.
