Battle Mountain sweeps North Tahoe with two walk-off wins

The Battle Mountain High School baseball team made it exciting for its fans this past weekend with a sweep of North Tahoe, which included two walk-off wins.

The Longhorns scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on Friday to beat the Lakers 6-5 and swept a doubleheader on Saturday 11-3 and another walk off 5-4 in the series finale.

Battle mountain improved to 9-3 in the Northern 2A and 9-7 overall.



BMHS 6, North Tahoe 5

North Tahoe grabbed an early 3-0 lead in the first inning on Friday night, when Battle Mountain got two of those runs back in the bottom of the second inning without the aid of a hit. 

Wiatt Kelly led off the frame with a walk and advanced to second on ground out. He stole second and eventually scored on an error. 

Asher Bundrock reached on a walked and scored on a wild pitch after advancing a pair of bases on a North Tahoe error.

After North Tahoe added a run in the fourth to lead 4-2, Battle Mountain tied the contest at 4-4 with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Colton Mills provided the tying run in the fifth after leading off with a single and scoring on another North Tahoe error.

The Lakers took the lead again at 6-5 in the top of the sixth, setting up the walk off for the Longhorns in the seventh inning. Mills led off the seventh with a single and he moved up to second base on an error.

With one out, Sage Holte walked and advanced to second base to put runner on second and third with one out. Jr. Vazquez followed with a single to tie thew game at 5-5 and Holte scored the winning run moments later on a wild pitch. 

Mills had two of Battle Mountain’s four hits and Jake Perrone and Vazquez added the other hits.

Perrone earned the win on the mound in five innings of work. He allowed four runs on nine hits, with seven strikeouts and three walks. Anthony Silva threw the final two innings and gave up one run on four hits. He struck out four and walked one.



BMHS 11, North Tahoe 3

Battle Mountain never trailed in the first game on Saturday, collecting doubles from Perrone. Kelly and Mills and a single by Matt Moore in a four-run first inning.

The Lakers plated single runs in the second, third and fourth innings but the Longhorns answered with two runs of their own in each of those three innings to lead 10-3.

Perrone gave Battle Mountain a 6-1 advantage in the second inning with a two-run home run. Perrone finished with two hits and three RBI.

Bundrock also had two hits and Holte, Kelly, Moore and Silva each had one hit.

Silva earned the win for the Longhorns with three runs (two earned) allowed on six hits in six innings of work. He struck out 11 and walked two. Holte threw the final inning and gave up two hits, with two walks and a strikeout.



BMHS 5, North Tahoe 4

Battle Mountain overcame a 2-0 deficit in the first inning and were behind 4-3 in the fifth inning before winning in the seventh inning.

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning, Perrone tied the game at 2-2 with a home run that scored Moore. The Longhorns took a 3-2 lead in the frame, when Kelly scored on a wild pitch after reaching base on a single.

With North Tahoe leading 5-4, Battle Mountain began its seventh-inning rally with a one out single by Moore. Perrone followed with a walk and on a 2-2 count, Kelly doubled home both runners with a ball in between center and right field.

Moore and Kelly each had two hits. Vazquez picked up the win in five innings of work. He allowed four runs (one earned) on two hits. 

He struck out eight and walked five. Holte finished the final two innings with two strikeouts and two hits allowed.

Battle Mountain hosted Pershing County on Tuesday and results were not available at press time. The Longhorns travel to Lovelock for a doubleheader on Saturday at 10 a.m.
