The Winnemucca City Council met for their regular meeting on April 4 and with all members present:
• A request for multiple street closures was approved by the Council from Second Street to Winnemucca Blvd. and parts of Fourth Street if necessary for Winnemucca Cruise Nights. The closures will take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on May 25, June 25, July 20, Aug. 17, and Sept. 17 and vehicle enthusiasts will have their rides on display in an event for the community to attend.
• The Council approved a request by the local Historic Preservation Society to use a recognition program to identify key families, figures, and groups in the community who have worked to preserve the history of downtown Winnemucca. The program will present an award based on the nominations from the community during May for National Historic Preservation Month.
• The Council proclaimed April 2023 Donate Life Month, highlighting the need and importance of organ and tissue donation, proclaimed May 1 as Winnemucca Youth Law Awareness Day, celebrating the importance of “teaching our youth their role in these times of change,” and proclaimed the entire month of May as National Mental health Awareness Month, raising awareness and reducing stigma and discrimination.
• The Council approved an ordinance adoption during a public hearing to rezone a Multiple Family/Mobile Home Park with Planned Development Overlay, located off of Sunny Drive, to a Multiple Family zoning designation, and a General Commercial with Planned Development Overlay to a Multiple Family zoning designation, located off of Hanson Street.
• The Council approved a request by the Winnemucca Police Department (WPD) to adopt an ordinance that would increase fees that provide for various animal control needs.
WPD Chief Mike Rangel assured that the fee increases will not be applied to adoption fees, but only those that are associated with providing basic care to dogs that are impounded.
• A public hearing was set in order to annex property located at 3545, 3565, and 3585 West Winnemucca Blvd. in the Pine West Development.
• The Council approved a request to waive curb, sidewalk and gutter standards for the same properties located at 3545, 3565, and 3585 West Winnemucca Blvd. in the Pine West Development.
The properties fall just outside of the City limits but Humboldt County Codes require properties located within a half a mile from the City must meet City Development Standards.
• The Council approved a tentative budget proposal for the 2023-2024 fiscal year that was discussed during their budget workshop on March 27. The proposal included revenues, expenditures, funding and budget projections, and proposals for additions or deletions to personnel, equipment, supplies and services. The proposal will also come before the Council again for final approval.
