If you want to see how far the Pershing County High School baseball team has come, look at where they were last year.
They ended 2022 at 3-24, overall, and 1-17 in the 2A.
This year they stand at 10-10 overall and 7-6 in the league.
This past week they faced the runner-up team in the 2A, Yerington (10-2) for a triple-header. The Mustangs traveled to Yerington on Tuesday, April 11, for the opener and lost 11-1.
This past Saturday, the Mustangs hosted and lost both games 14-0 and 19-1.
"We made errors at the worst times throughout the series. Against the good teams, making little errors can cost you huge. A team like Yerington will take advantage and jump on you. Then it's hard to fight back," coach Jared Jensen said.
Wyatt Diaz pitched the opener and went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead the Mustangs in hits. Trenton Rhodes pitched the second game and led at the plate with one hit in two at-bats. Blake Burrows pitched the nightcap. He, Ayden Montes, and Diaz each got a hit.
"This season we had to learn how to win again. It's been so long since we won many games. We now have to learn to compete with the outstanding teams in the league. We've come a long way. We have to get over the next hump," said Jensen.
Pershing County traveled to Incline on Wednesday and results were not available at press time.
The Mustangs go to Battle Mountain for the first game of a tripleheader on Tuesday, April 25.
They'll play the last two games at home on Saturday, April 29, at 10 a.m. and noon.
