Spring has sprung and it’s time for the annual color run! Get moving on April 22 during the 2023 Color the Mucc 3K and 5K beginning at 10 a.m. at the Ralph Whitworth Recreation Complex and celebrate afterwards at the Party in the Park with Winnemucca Domestic Violence Services (WDVS).

The Humboldt County Chamber of Commerce (HCCC) and Humboldt General Hospital (HGH) are partnering to promote community fitness and wellness with the run/walk and WDVS is hosting the Party on the soccer field adjacent to the Winnemucca Boys & Girls Club and has invited multiple community partners to participate in the fun.

HCCC President  Alicia Cramer said “[The Color Run and Party in the Park] are fun for everyone, with community information booths, food trucks, music and more. Even if you don’t do the fun run/walk you should check out the Party in the Park—but please do come do the fun run!”

All the funds raised will go towards a scholarship for a graduating senior from Lowry High School, according to Cramer, “so the more who participate the better!”

After nine years, the participation in the event continues to grow. The HCC sees more and more participating in both the run/walk and as those making sure participants get covered in colorful powder at the color stations.

“This is the ninth year of the Color the Mucc, although we didn’t do it in 2020. We thought it would be a two to three year fad and then retire itself, but it keeps growing,” explained Cramer in an email.

Early registration costs for the Color Run are $35 per person 13 and over; $25 for 6-12 years; $30 per team member for teams of five or more; a Family Team (immediate family: parents and children only) is $65. There is no charge for the race for children 5 and under. The cost for those that register the day of the race will be $45 per person (cash only).

The 5K race is as close to a true 5K for the serious runners and the 3K is an option for anyone, including those that may want to participate in a large group or with their family and children. The route will take participants through approximately 13 color stations, situated at different points along the route. Riders are also welcome to participate, but will start after those running or walking.

“The race begins at the Ralph Whitworth Recreation Center, and travels down Great Basin Ave, a short stint on E. Winnemucca Blvd,  up Highland, Kluncy Canyon and back down Great Basin and ends at the soccer field with the Party in the Park,” explained HCCC Executive Director Debbie Stone in an email.

WDVS Director Sam Kepler said that there will be 15 to 20 different booths at the Party in the Park. There will also be multiple food options, music and other fun activities for families and free water thanks to donations from Big R.

“I think [Party in the Park] is a good opportunity for people to just see local organizations and people that are out in our community and what they do…I don’t think people realize how many resources we have here and so this would be a good opportunity for them to just kind of see what is all out there,” said Kepler.

April is a big month for WDVS, with multiple campaigns taking place to raise awareness for different forms of domestic violence and the Party in the Park helps get the message out to the community.

“We want everybody know that we’re here, that we do have resources that can help you if you’re in a domestic violence or sexual assault incident or situation,” said Kepler.
