The Battle Mountain High School softball team remained red hot in the Northern 2A, with three wins at home this past Easter weekend over Yerington.
The Lady Longhorns improved to 9-0 in the Northern 2A and 10-1 overall, with the only loss coming to Sparks of the Northern 3A.
In Friday’s opener, Battle Mountain built a 5-0 lead through three innings but had to hold on in the end.
Yerington finally got on the board in the top of the fifth inning, but the Lady Longhorns quickly got the run back.
Yerington plated two runs in the sixth inning to trim the Battle Mountain lead to 6-3 but once again, the Lady Longhorns answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to go back in front 8-3.
The Lions had one last rally left in them with a pair of runs in the seventh inning, but it didn’t go further as Battle Mountain held on for the win.
In the first game on Saturday, Battle Mountain plated four runs in the first inning and led 5-0, when Yerington scored three times in the top of the fifth inning to cut the gap to 5-3.
The Lady Longhorns countered with two runs in the fifth inning and broke the game open with five runs in the sixth.
Just as it was in the first two games, Battle Mountain built a big lead at the start of the game and had to hold on in the end.
Yerington rallied in the seventh inning and had the winning run at the plate but
Shea Jones struck out the final batter to secure the victory and sweep.
Battle Mountain leads the Northern 2A at 9-0, with Pershing County second at 8-0. Yerington (6-3) and West Wendover (3-6) hold the final two playoff spots. Silver Stage is fifth at 2-6.
The top four teams advance to the Northern 2A Regional Championships in Lovelock on May 12-13.
Battle Mountain is off this week and hosts North Tahoe on Friday, April 21, at 4 p.m.
The two squads play a doubleheader on Saturday at 10 a.m.
The Longhorns host Pershing County on Tuesday, April 25, at 3 p.m., before traveling to Lovelock on April 29, for a doubleheader at 10 a.m.
