Battle Mountain drops three games to Yerington

The Battle Mountain High School baseball team was on its home field for Easter weekend to take on Yerington in Northern 2A play.

After six straight wins to start league action, the Longhorns dropped all three games to the Lions to drop to 6-7 overall and 6-3 in the Northern 2A.

Yerington won the series opener on Friday 2-0 and swept Saturday’s doubleheader 3-1 and 10-4.

Battle Mountain was held without a hit in the first game of the series, in the low-scoring match-up. Yerington’s Justin Evasovic picked up the win for the Lions.

Yerington plated a pair of runs in the first inning in Saturday’s opening game and held on to the slim lead.

Battle Mountain cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Liam Bundrock drove in Matt Moore. That proved to be the lone run for the Longhorns.

Jr Vazquez and Wiatt Kelley each added a hit, including a double from Vazquez.

Vazquez started for the Longhorns and provided a strong effort on the mound. All three runs that Yerington scored were unearned.

He allowed seven hits and struck out six while walking one. Jake Perrone got the final out of the game, as Vazquez hit his pitch limit in the seventh inning.

Evasovic came back throw the final four innings for Yerington, with nine strikeouts. Valor Angle started for the Lions.

Yerington 10,

Battle Mountain 4

Yerington took an early 3-0 lead after the top of the third inning in the series finale, when Battle Mountain struck back in the bottom of the third.

With a pair of runners on base, Yerington intentionally walked Perrone to load the bases. The strategy backfired, as Kelley made the Lions pay with a two-RBUI double to close the gap to 3-2.

Yerington got four runs back in the top of the fourth inning to lead 7-2, when the Longhorns’ Anthony Molina doubled home two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to close the gap to 7-4.

That was as close as Battle Mountain got, as Yerington added a single run in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh to secure the win.

Sage Holte, Vazquez, Perrone, Molina, Silva, Moore and Kelley had one hit apiece.

Perrone started for Battle Mountain and suffered the loss.

He allowed seven runs (three earned) in four innings of work.

He gave up 11 hits, walked four and struck out two. Holte threw the final three innings for the Longhorns and gave up three runs (two earned) on seven hits. He walked one and struck out one.

West Wendover leads the Northern 2A at 8-1, followed by Yerington (7-2), Pershing County (7-3) and Battle Mountain (6-3). North Tahoe is fifth at 2-5 and Incline and Silver Stage are both 0-8.

The top four teams advance to the Northern 2A Regional Championships in Lovelock on May 12-13.
