LHS golfers finish sixth and fifth in opening tournaments

After a month of bad weather and a lot of practicing, the Lowry High School boys golf team finally got on the course last week with its first Northern 3A tournaments of the season.


The Buckaroos were in Dayton on Monday, March 27, to play the challenging Dayton Valley Country Club designed by Arnold Palmer.


Lowry finished sixth in the first event of the season with a team score of 389. 


The top seven teams were separated by 43 strokes. South Tahoe took home the team title at 345, followed by Fernley (349). Truckee (358), Elko (371) and Spring Creek (374) rounded out the top five Churchill County was seventh at 392.


Fernley’s Jacob Holmes was the low medalist with an impressive round of 72 and South Tahoe’s Sean Molesworth (83) was second. 


Lowry’s Landon Esquivel and Truckee’s Drew Drollinger tied for third with rounds of 84.


Jack DeLong was the only other Buckaroo to break a 100, with a round of 99. Hector Rivera (101) and Codas Nichols (105) had the other kept scores for Lowry. 


AJ Mendoza finished his round at 108 and Kruser Wilkinson carded a 119.

fifth at Fernley


The Northern 3A moved to Fernley on Tuesday, March 28, and the team standings shook up a bit.


Truckee and Fernley tied for first at 348, while Elko was third at 375 and South Tahoe (377) and Lowry (379) completed the top five. 


Spring Creek finished sixth at 384 and Churchill County (388) and Dayton (451) were seventh and eighth, respectively.


Holmes was the low medalist for a second straight day, shooting 78 on his home course. 


South Tahoe’s Jonny Womack and Truckee’s Luke Brown tied for second at 84 and Truckee’s Reed Loper (85) was fourth.


Esquivel turned in another nice round at 86, while teammates Mendoza and Nichols shot 92 and 98, respectively. 


Rivera and DeLong each shot 103 and Wilkinson carded a 104.


The Northern 3A does not conduct a postseason tournament to send its teams to the state championships. The three spots are determined by the final point standings.


Fernley leads the league with 14.5 points, Truckee is second at 13.5 and South Tahoe is third with 13 points. Elko sits in fourth will 11 points and Spring Creek and Lowry are tied with seven points apiece.     


The Northern 3A takes another break and returns to the course on Monday, April 17, in Winnemucca at 10 a.m. The league travels to Fallon on Tuesday, April 18.
