Letter to the Editor: Potential transloading terminal

In light of recent train derailments across the country what are the plans for a derailment at this proposed site? Is the hospital going to be set up to accommodate those affected?

Are there any provisions for containment of hazardous material spills? How would the water table be affected?

Who will bear the costs of a disaster - the county? the city? the residents? Lithium Nevada? the railroad?

I realize the City council is still in the early phase of deciding whether or not this land may be leased or sold, but there are definitely locations a bit safer for such a project, such as out Jungo Road (I do not dismiss the residents out Jungo Road, but the cyanide plant seems to be operating fairly safely out there).

Increased traffic on Rose Creek road should also be taken in to account; A site off Jungo road would reduce traffic exposure in more densely populated areas.

I am all in favor of any project that enhances the economic health of Winnemucca and Humboldt county, but the transloading facility needs to approached cautiously and with as much awareness of the hazards as well as the benefits.
