The Winnemucca Junior High School seventh and eighth-grade wrestling teams swept the titles at the Tah-Neva Championships at Pershing County High School in Lovelock on Saturday, March 25.
The seventh-grade squad ran away with the title with 212 points, while White Pine (143) and Battle Mountain (116.5) were second and third, respectively.
Churchill County (86) and Dayton (62) rounded out the top five.
The eighth-grade team won with 168.5 points and Pershing County (95) and Churchill (County (87) were second and third.
“We had a great weekend in Lovelock at the Tah-Neva Championships,” said coach John Brooks. “We brought 45 wrestlers to the tournament and came out with 15 champions, including two outstanding wrestler awards in Odyn (Santos) and Izayah (Hoover). We also had a girl win a title as well. It has been several years since we have won both titles, so that was the goal this year. The kids worked hard for it and it paid off.”
Breiah Davis won the girls championship at 90 pounds with wins over Ari Klein of Pau-Wa-Lu and Isabelle Tamondong of Carson Valley in the championship by a 3-0 decision.
Elena Gomez was third at 90 pounds, as she picked up two wins, beating Klein in the third-place match by pin.
Alysson Hernandez finished third at 150 pounds, as she won three matches and Aleiyah Dodson also wrestled at 150 pounds and collected a victory.
Seventh-grade results
In the boys seventh grade division, Carlos Gomez (85), Ethan Garcia (95), Santos (110), Teyo Gomez (115) and Vincent Gomez (120) won individual titles for Winnemucca.
Carlos Gomez won his first two matches by pin and he beat Braylon Byrd of Oasis Academy 6-4 in overtime in the championship with a takedown.
Garcia had little trouble in winning his title, picking up pins the first two matches and a 14-0 victory in the championship over Bartell Hammon of Churchill County.
Santos won his first bout by pins and had to finish the day winning by decision. Santos beat Talviano Sifre of White Pine 8-2 in the semifinals and Jaden Borsini of Yerington 7-3 in the championship.
Teyo Gomez cruised with two pins in his first matches and he narrowly defeated Alijah Juarez of Churchill County 4-3 to win at 115 pounds.
Vincent Gomez needed just 26 and 55 seconds to win his first two matches by pin and he captured the 120-pound crown with a 4-1 win over teammate Brock Staley. Staley had two wins on his way to the runner-up finish.
In addition to Staley, Aiden Matthews (75), Dyson Curry (105) and Ben Marvel (125) finished second for the Warriors.
Karl Sisley (70), Michael Shaw (135) and Andrew Egbert (heavyweight) finished third and Txendoa Cabatbat (145) placed fourth.
Giovanni Leon, Jaykub Esquibel, Jory Harber, Anthony Ramirez, Dezmond Rodriguez, Alex Dagio and Dominick Casteneda also wrestled for the seventh-grade squad.
Eighth-grade results
In the eighth-grade division, Kegin Rogers (90), Edward Jones (95), Izayah Hoover (105), Urijah Davis (135), Dominic Mercado (140) and Gabriel Hernandez (heavyweight) won individual titles for the Warriors.
Rogers wrestled just once on the day, pinning Pershing County’ Reece Craig in 55 seconds.
After a first round bye, Jones knocked off Merrick Wood of Silver Stage by pin the semifinals and he earned a 5-1 win over Blake Dineen of Churchill County in the championship.
Hoover won both his matches by pin, knocking off Ryder Arigoni of Pa-Wa-Lu and Matthew Manley of Eagle Valley.
Davis had thee matches on the day and started with a pin of Karter Bisagno of Alder Creek. In the semifinals, Davis beat Michael Terrazas of Oasis Academy 7-0 and in the championship, he knocked off Pershing County’s Cade Liebsack 5-1.
Mercado wrestled three times as well, winning all three by decision,
He won his opener 10-0 over Mason Forst of Pa-Wa-Lu and beat White Pine’s Trevin Stark 10-4 in the semifinals and in the championship, he beat Nathan Kuehner of Eagle Valley 15-3.
Hernandez won his first bouts by pin over Josiah Chavez of Eagle Valley and teammate Kaszin Gonzalez in the semifinal in the championship, he defeated teammate Izayus Barajas for the title.
In addition to Barajas, Andrew Mendoza (120) and Alessandro Huerta (175) earned runner-up finishes for Winnemucca.
DeAndre Duenas (80), Trenten Johnson (100) and Michael Braun (160) were third and Schultze (95), Isaiah Chavez (150) and Kaszin Gonzalez (heavyweight) placed fourth.
Waylon Jones, Julian Valencia, Elijah Lange, Devyn Kennedy and Isaac Dini also wrestled for Winnemucca.
