Maria L. Castellanos, age 86, of Winnemucca, Nevada passed away on Friday, March 24, 2023 in San Diego, California at her son's home.
Maria was born in Silao, Guanajuato, Mexico on March 31, 1936; she attended school in her hometown and studied English as a second language when her family emigrated to the United States.
Maria was a member of her local Catholic Church, St. Paul's. She loved to travel, to cook, and to spend time with her family.
She worked for over 42 years in several Winnemucca business establishments where she was always appreciated for her work ethic.
She is survived by her husband, Uriel Castellanos, their son Rafael Castellanos and his wife, Angie, and their sons Ray and Dylan.
She also leaves behind a brother, Luis Hernandez, and his wife Marjie of Winnemucca, a sister Herlinda Hernandez of Reno, as well as two nephews and a niece: Carlos (Jenny) Hernandez and Angie (Tony) Marconato of Reno, and Michael (Maite) Hernandez of Winnemucca. Her grand nephews and grand nieces include: Hailey (Dylan) Spencer, Carlee Hernandez and daughter Stella, Domenic and Scout Marconato, and Mateo and Mia Hernandez.
Maria was preceded in death by her parents: Rafael Hernandez (2003) and her mother Margarita L. Hernandez (1991) and two brothers, Delfino Hernandez (2015) and Rafael Armando (1948).
Her father, Rafael, first came to the U.S. in 1949 and later brought his family to join him in 1957.
He worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad Co., so the family lived in several railroad sections and small towns in northern Nevada until they settled in Winnemucca in 1959.
A viewing and rosary was held for Maria on Monday, April 3rd at the Sonoma Funeral Home in Winnemucca, a funeral mass was held at St. Paul's Catholic Church on April 4th, and she was thereafter interred at the Winnemucca cemetery.
