Obituary: Lesley Mark “Rhino” Hillyer

Lesley Mark “Rhino” Hillyer peacefully passed away on September 5, 2022, at his home in Elko, Nevada.

He was born December 21, 1956, in Winnemucca, Nevada, to Lesley and Mary Hillyer.

He spent his childhood in Winnemucca and graduated from Albert Lowry High School in 1974.

He excelled at Track and Field events, earning many state championships and awards.

After graduation, he set out to find work in California, Washington, and many communities within Nevada in the construction and mining fields.

For the past 25 years, he umpired adult softball leagues throughout Northern Nevada, where he found his true calling.

In 2009, he married the love of his life Tammy Rene in Reno, Nevada. Together they enjoyed traveling and caring for their many animals until she passed away in 2019.

He was preceded in death by his father Lesley, mother Mary, younger brother Billy and his beloved wife, Tammy Rene.

Rhino was a force that left lasting memories to all that encountered him. He loved to share stories, tell sassy jokes, poke a little fun and occasionally flash the blade of his favorite knife.

He had an unwavering love for his family and friends. Although he left us too soon, he lived his life to the fullest and lived it how HE wanted!

Graveside services will be on October 1, 2022, at 10 am at the Winnemucca Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will immediately follow at the Boys and Girls Club in Winnemucca, Nevada.

He is survived by his younger brother Andrew, sister-in-law Karen, nieces Katie and Hannah, nephew Blake, cousins, aunts, uncles, and many friends.

Rhino, we hope you are umpiring behind home plate with a full count, wielding a Samurai sword and that mischievous twinkle in your eyes.

You will be dearly missed! We love you, buddy!
