After nearly a month after playing its opening match of the season at the end of August in Pyramid Lake, the McDermitt High School volleyball team was back on its home floor this past Saturday to open Eastern 1A play against Eureka.
The young Lady Bulldogs squad gave the Vandals everything they could handle, but Eureka won the match in three sets 25-21-25-10 and 25-18.
McDermitt quickly scored the first three points of the match off kills by Sadie Hinkey and Vina Tom and an ace by Nicolette Northrup.
Hinkey and Northup added kills midway through the opening set, but Eureka battled back to tie at 10 apiece.
The Vandals rallied to grab a 12-10 lead but Tom completed a 4-0 run by McDermitt with an ace to put the Lady Bulldogs back up by two points at 14-12.
The was the final time McDermitt led in the set, as Eureka scored the next four points.
The Lady Bulldogs tied the set at 19 after kills by Breena Crutcher and Tom and were within a point at 22-21, following an ace by Crutcher, only to see the Vandals end the set with three straight points.
McDermitt was within two points a 5-3 early in the second set after a kill by Crutcher and tip from Alexis Scott, when Eureka scored the next 11 points and never looked back.
Tom stopped the run with a kill, but the Vandals kept the pressure up to lead 22-5 and eventually win the set 25-10.
Behind a kill from Hinkey the third set was tied at 4-4, when Eureka went on a 6-0 run to go in front 10-4 and the Vandals did not look back.
The advantage grew to 18-10, but McDermitt had one last run in them to cut the deficit to 18-14 but got no closer than that the rest of the way.
