The Pershing County volleyball team won two league games this past week.
On Friday, they traveled to the Silver State Volleyball Club to play Coral Academy.
The Mustangs beat the Falcons 25-18, 19-25, 25-13, 25-14.
Saturday Pershing hosted North Tahoe in a game that turned into a battle. The scores tied throughout each match.
One team would score a point only to have the other team tie it up again. Finally, to the relief of the home crowd, Morgan Swindlehurst scored the game-winning two points in the final set 22-25, 25-19, 16-25, 25-23, 19-17.
North Tahoe went 3-0 against both West Wendover and Battle Mountain earlier this month. Their confidence on the court may have rattled the Mustangs at first. But not for long.
“We started so slow with no energy, missing over seven serves in the first set before I called a timeout,” Monica Halverson said. “It was a team effort to beat the Lakers and made for some exciting volleyball. My bench played extremely well and stepped up when they needed to.”
Sophomore Raegan Burrows led the attack with 10 kills, three blocks and 20 digs, a strong defense. Taylor Garland led the defense with 35 digs. She also had one ace serve, four kills and three assists.
“It was great to win on our home court and have the stand loud,” Halverson said. The fans cheered each point as exuberantly as the players, especially in the final set.
For Homecoming Week, Pershing hosts Battle Mountain and West Wendover.
They play Battle Mountain on Thursday. JV starts at 4 p.m. and varsity follows at 5 p.m.
The Mustangs host West Wendover on Saturday. JV plays at 11 a.m. and varsity starts at noon.
