The Northern 3A girls golf season finally got under way last week with a pair of tournaments in Eastern Nevada.

Temperatures over 100 degrees greeted the golfers, as they hit the course for the first time in Spring Creek and Elko.

The season opened up in Spring Creek on Tuesday, Sept. 6, where the Lowry High School girls golf team finished fourth with a four-player total of 469.

Douglas, the defending 3A state champion won the tournament by 110 strokes with a score of 349. They had the top three individual spots in Giana Zinke (82), Abby Miller (88) and Madison Frisby (88).

Truckee and South Tahoe tied for second at 459 and Lowry (469) and Spring Creek (498) rounded out the top five.

Lowry’s Katie Cassinelli was fourth overall with a round of 90. While teammate Lainey Novacek carded a 119.

Kailani Rodriguez shot 126 and Jordyn Medicine Cloud (134) and Isabella Bartell (136) completed the scores for the Lady Bucks.



Douglas wins

easily in Elko

The Northern 3A moved to Elko and Ruby View Golf Course on Wednesday, Sept. 7, and Douglas ran away with the team title with a total of 316. South Tahoe finished second at 447, followed by Truckee (449), Elko (462) and Lowry 470).

Douglas had the top three individuals once again, with Miller earning medalist honors with a round of 73. Zinke was second at 76 and Frisby (81) placed third.

The Tigers had five of the top six scores on the day.

Cassinelli was sixth overall, with her second consecutive round of 90. Novacek shot 122 for the Lady Bucks and Rodriguez carded a 128. Medicine Cloud shot a 130 and Bartell finished at 136.

The Northern 3A does not have a postseason regional tournament and the top three teams that advance to the NIAA 3A State Championships are based on season-long point standings.

Douglas leads with 15 points, followed by South Tahoe (12.5), Truckee (11.5) and Lowry (8).

The Northern 3A is off this week and returns to the course on Sept. 20 in Dayton and Sept. 21 in Fernley. Lowry hosts its tournament on Sept. 26.
