Battle Mountain volleyball team drops Northern 2A matches in Lake Tahoe

While outdoor sports were canceled in Lake Tahoe this past weekend, the Battle Mountain High School volleyball team was able to get its Northern 2A openers finished at Incline and North Tahoe this past weekend.

The Lady Longhorns were in Incline on Friday night and the Highlanders pulled out a four-set victory, winning 25-17, 25-14, 20-25, 25-20.

Cristina Holley collected eight of Battle Mountain’s 20 kills, with junior Olivia Lemaire adding five of her own. Lauryn Avey, Shea Jones and Galileah Benavidez had two kills apiece. Liliana Haney had one kill.

Heidy Amezcua and Avey had two aces apiece and Holley and Jones had one ace each. Emely Farias and Holley each had two blocks.

Battle Mountain moved over to Tahoe City, Calif., on Saturday and lost in three sets to North Tahoe 25-9, 25-23 and 25-23. The defeats dropped the Lady Longhorns to 0-2 in the Northern 2A and 5-8 overall.

Jones and Benavidez paced the Lady Longhorns with five and three kills, respectively. 

Holley and Lemaire each had two kills and Avey and Bailey Elderkin one kill each.

Jones had all three aces for Battle Mountain and Elderkin had a block.

Battle Mountain will spend its weekend in Wendover, with a league match in West Wendover on Friday at 5 p.m. Mountain time. 

The Lady Longhorns will be in Wendover, Utah on Saturday to play Maeser Prep Academy (Lindon, Utah) at 9 a.m. and Manila, Utah, at 10 a.m.           

Battle Mountain travels to Lovelock on Thursday, Sept. 22, to play Pershing County.
