The PCHS volleyball week started last Thursday with a 5:30 a.m. practice. The girls got up early so they could support the football team in Battle Mountain. On Friday, the Mustangs beat the visiting Incline Highlanders in five sets 19-25, 32-30. 25-20, 17-25, 15-13.
This past Saturday, Pershing County traveled to Tahoe City, Calif., and lost to the North Tahoe Lakers in four sets 16-25, 25-21, 21-25, 23-25.

Dig Pink game ends in Mustang win
The mood at Friday’s game was festive. Volunteers decorated the gym and sold cupcakes.
The athletes and some of the home crowd wore pink tee shirts for the annual fundraiser.
The athletes had bows in their hair.
“With all the distractions, my girls came out pretty frazzled but pulled it together in the second set. Both teams battled and there were some great rallies and saved balls. We had a great game at the net with spectacular hits and blocks. I’m proud of the girls for digging deep and pushing to the last two points,” coach Monica Halverson said.
Each set tied up until the end. The JV girls in the student section cheered every Mustang point.
Raegan Burrows led the attack with 20 kills, 19 digs and four aces. Taylor Garland added another 40 digs to her record, along with two aces and three kills. Kaydance Happy had 12 kills and 10 digs. Yasmine McKinney added one kill and one dig.
North Tahoe knocks off the Mustangs
The Tahoe City girls shook Pershing County’s blockers and defense. The Mustangs recovered their equilibrium by the second set, which they won by three points.
“We started working like a team should. We had more energy and tracked their hits and tips better. Our blocking was more effective as we double blocked the middle and shut down their heavy hitters,” Halverson said. “My team fought hard and, sadly, came up with the loss. I’m excited to see the Lakers at playoffs.”
Andrea Canchola had six digs. Aaliyah Allen added three kills, three solo blocks and seven digs.
Kaylen Halverson had four ace serves, three kills, 10 assists and 17 digs. Anna Happy added one kill, 18 assists and 15 digs.
