Lady Bucks pick up three home wins in busy week

The Lowry High School girls soccer team kept its postseason hopes alive with three ins at home last week.

Lowry hosted Sparks in its final crossover match with the Northern 3A West and routed the Railroaders 7-1. Alia Novi collected a hat trick on the day and Maite Avalos added two goals.

The Lady Bucks grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute, as Avalos took a pass from Novi and finished the shot off.

About 10 minutes later, Novi was fouled inside the box, creating a penalty kick and Sugey Linares did the rest, convert the PK for a 2-0 advantage.

Novi picked her first goal of the day in extra time at the end of the first half to give Lowry a 3-0 lead at the break. The junior added her second goal five minutes into the second half on a penalty kick.

Freshman Natalya Guizar made the score 5-0 in the 55th minute, as she put back a shot that was previously saved. Novi picked her hat trick in the 57th minute as he hit the back corner of the net from about 20 yards away.

Sparks prevented the shutout in the 59th minute, but Lowry got the goal back as, Avalos, a freshman, nailed a kick from 25 yards out to complete the scoring.

Lowry 6, Dayton 0

Minus some dust and strong winds, Lowry celebrated senior day in style this past Friday afternoon with a 6-0 win over Dayton. The Lady Bucks netted one goal in the first half, that coming from a shot from the side of the net by Avalos.

Lowry turned up the pressure in the second half with four goals, starting in the 48th minute off a kick by Otila Castaneda.

Avalos added her second goal in the 58th minute and Guizar made the score 4-0 in the 67th minute, putting back a previously saved shot.

Sydnee Pettis added two goals in a two-minute stretch at the end of the match to account for the final score.

Lowry 5, Fernley 2

Lowry closed out the weekend in cold and wet conditions but the day was for a good cause. The Lowry girls used the contest as a fundraiser for Joseph Esquibel, who was recently diagnosed with cancer.

His sister, Katlyn scored the first goal of the game. The fundraisers during the game gathered over $3,000 in donations. Joseph had his third treatment on Sunday.

With the three wins, Lowry improved to 9-7-2 overall, 6-1-1 in the Northern 3A East and 1-4-1 in crossover matches.

Lowry traveled to Spring Creek on Tuesday and results were not available at press time. The regular season concludes on Thursday against Elko at 3:45 p.m.

The top six teams advance to the Northern 3A Regional Championships in Truckee from Nov. 3-5. South Tahoe, Hug and Truckee have clinched playoff berths.

Elko leads the Northern 3A East at 7-0-1, Lowry is second at 6-1-1 and Spring Creek (5-2-1) is third.
