Churchill County knocks off Lowry in five sets

A year ago, the finish in the Northern 3A volleyball season was a crazy one, with everyone seemingly beating everyone and shaking up the standings.

The second half of the Northern 3A schedule began last week and the league might be in for the same kind of finish in 2022.

Lowry High School traveled to Fallon on Tuesday, Oct. 11, to take on Churchill County, who came into the match winless in the Northern 3A East at 0-5.

The Lady Bucks already beat the Greenwave earlier in the year in four sets.

Despite what the records said, Churchill County picked up its first league win, beating Lowry 22-25, 25-18, 25-7, 22-25 and 15-9.

The Lady Bucks raced to a 11-3 lead in the first set and were in cruise control at 19-10 after a kill by Kailey Franklin.

Lowry continued to control the set at 23-12, when Churchill County went on a 10-2 run to close the gap to 24-22. The Lady Bucks saved the set, as Franklin ended it with a kill.

Despite dropping the opening set, the Greenwave took that momentum into the second set and led 9-3, forcing Lowry to call a time out.

Aided by a kill from Emma Gray, the Lady Bucks battled back to tie the set at 12.

A pair of kills by Savannah Stoker midway through the second set kept Lowry within a point at 17-16, but the Greenwave pulled away from there.

The third set was dominated by Churchill County. Who scored 13 of the first 15 points. The advantage grew to as much as 18 points in the set.

The Lady Bucks found themselves down in a big hole once again in the fourth set at 12-6.

Lowry slowly crept back into the set off of kills by Franklin and Stoker and after tying the set at 22 it scored the final three points to send the match to a fifth and deciding set.

Lowry turned the tables on Churchill County and started the set with an ace from Megan Cook and led 7-3 after kills by Cambria Tisue and Gray.

The Greenwave cut the deficit to 8-7, when Tisue and answered with a kill to increase the lead to 9-7.

That was the final point for Lowry, as Churchill County ended the match on an 8-0 run.

Lowry dropped to 3-3 in the Northern 3A East and 16-7 overall.

The Lady Bucks host Dayton on Friday at 6 p.m. and Fernley on Saturday at noon.

Lowry is back on the road to Spring Creek on Tuesday, Oct. 25, for a 6 p.m. start.
