Lowry High School sophomore Katie Cassinelli earned Northern 3A first-team honors, as the regular season of the girls golf season came to and end last week in Lake Tahoe.

Freshman teammate Lainey Novacek was named to the second team.

Cassinelli and Novacek competed at the NIAA 3A State Championships that were held Monday and Tuesday at Genoa Lakes Golf Club.

Results were not available at press time.

Lowry shot some of its best scores of the year to conclude the regular season and finished second at Truckee’s tournament on Monday, Oct. 10 at Tahoe Donner Golf Course with a total of 434.

Douglas, the Northern 3A champion, won with a 358. Elko was third at 443 and Truckee (449) and South Tahoe (450) rounded out the top five.

Douglas’ Giana Zinke, who was the Most Valuable Player this year, won medalist honors with a round of 83.

Cassinelli was second with a round of 88 and Douglas’ Abbigail Detsch was third at 91.

Novacek carded a 100 for the Lady Bucks, Jordyn Medicine Cloud shot 118 and Kailani Rodriguez (128) and Isabella Bartell (135) completed the scores for the Lady Bucks.

The Northern 3A was at Tahoe Paradise Golf Course on Tuesday, Oct. 11, for the South Tahoe tournament.

Douglas won the team title with a 329, while South Tahoe (422) and Lowry (426) were second and third, respectively.

Douglas had the top three finishers, with Cassinelli tying for fifth with a score of 88.

Novacek shot her second straight 100 and Medicine Cloud finished at 115, Bartell carded a 123 and Rodriguez finished with a 128.

The Northern 3A does not have a regional championship tournament and the three state tournament berths are based on points gained through the regular season.

Douglas won the Northern 3A championship with 67 points and South Tahoe (53.5) and Truckee (45.5) gained the other two state berths. Lowry was fourth at 43 points.

The Northern 3A first team included the entire Douglas team of Zinke (MVP), Abby Miller, Madison Frisby, Mackenzie Willis, Logan Karwoski and Detsch.

Cassinelli was the lone non-Douglas player on the first team.

Joining Novacek on the second team was Fernley’s Nadia Velasquez, Truckee’s Ashley Estabrook, Elko’s Katherine Winer, Spring Creek’s Hazel Zastrow and Churchill County’s Hannah Benjamin.

The Lowry High School Todd Milton Award for sportsmanship was given to Truckee’s Samantha O’Neil.

The award is given out at the end of the year in memory of Lowry golf coach Todd Milton who passed away.
