It was a rollercoaster of a week for the Lowry High School volleyball team. The Lady Bucks experienced the lows and highs of the sport in a matter of a couple of days.
Lowry hosted Spring Creek on Tuesday, Oct. 4, and looked poised to sweep the Spartans.
The Lady Bucks won the first two sets 25-15 and 25-20. The Lady Bucks had match point three times in the third set but dropped a thriller 31-29. Spring Creek eon set four 25-22 and the fifth 16-14.
Just a couple days later, Lowry had to board a bus for league-leading Elko.
The Indians were undefeated in Northern 3A East play but the Lady Bucks left Elko with a 25-20, 25-16 and 26-24 to finish the first half of the Northern 3A East schedule at 3-2 and 16-6 overall.
Elko and Dayton are 4-1 in league play with Elko beating Dayton and Lowry and Spring Creek ae both 3-2.
After Lowry won the first two sets against Spring Creek, the Spartans scored three of the first four points of the third set. The Lady Bucks rallied for the next three points off a kill by Savannah Stoker, a tip by Jada Matheny and kill by Cambria Tisue.
Lowry kept the third set tied at 10 off a block by Stoker and the junior gave the Lady Bucks the lead at 12-11 after a kill. Spring Creek made a run of its own to go in front 18-13, but Lowry scored the next four points aided by an ace from Belen Barocio.
The shift in momentum continued, as the Spartans led 22-19 but they missed a serve on the next point. Senior Emma Gray followed with an ace on the next point but then she missed a serve giving Spring Creek a 23-21 lead.
The Spartans had set point at 24-22, only to see the lady Bucks tie the set at 24.
A block by Stoker kept the set going at 25 all and Lowry led 27-26 and 28-27 with match point but could not get the winning point.
Leading 29-28, the Lady Bucks had a service error that allowed the Spartans to tie the set at 29. Spring Creek scored the next two points to keep the match alive.
Lowry led throughout much of the fourth set, picking up kills from Stoker, Megan Cook and Kailey Franklin.
The Lady Bucks led 20-17 late in the fourth set, when Spring Creek rallied to tie it at 22. On the next point, the Spartans served an ace and then won the final two points to go to a fifth set.
Spring Creek raced out to a 9-3 advantage in the fifth set, forcing Lowry to call a timeout.
A kill by Franklin drew the Lady Bucks closer and service errors by the Spartans closed the gap to 12-9.
Lowry saved three match points at 14-11 with two kills from Gray and a kill from Cook to tie the set at 14.
However, Spring Creek held on to score the final two points to get the victory.
Lowry traveled to Fallon on Tuesday and results were not available at press time.
The Lady Bucks are off this weekend and host Dayton on Oct. 21 at 6 p.m. and Fernley on Oct. 22 at noon.
