The Battle Mountain High School football team took to the road last Friday with the tough task of taking on the defending 2A state champion Yerington Lions.
The Lions used a number of big plays to knock off the Longhorns 41-21, dropping Battle Mountain to 3-1 in league play and 4-2 overall.
Yerington grabbed a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on runs of 64 and 79 yards.
Early in the second quarter, Battle Mountain cut the deficit in half off a 14-yard pass play.
Yerington quickly bounced back, scoring quickly on 95-yard run and ended the first-half scoring with a 4-yard run to lead 28-7 at the break.
The Lions added to their lead with a touchdown run in the third quarter to make the score 34-7, when Battle Mountain found the end zone early in the fourth quarter on a 29-yard pass.
The 2-point conversion failed and Yerington led 34-13 with 10 minutes to play.
The Lions pushed the advantage back to 28 points at 41-13 with a touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter.
The Longhorns closed out the scoring late in the fourth quarter on a 4-yard rushing touchdown.
Battle Mountain is back on the road this week and travels to Reno to play Coral Academy at Damonte Ranch High School.
The Longhorns’ home match-up with Pershing County has been moved up a day to Thursday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m.
Yerington leads the Northern 2A at 3-0, with Battle Mountain and Pershing County tied for second at 3-1. Incline is fourth at 2-2.
The top four teams in the Northern 2A advance to the state playoffs.
The first round of the playoffs begin Nov. 4. The No. 1 seed will host the No. 4 seed and the No. 3 seed will travel to the No. 2 seed.
