The Lowry High School boys soccer team turned in its best performances of the season this past weekend on its home field.
The Buckaroos notched their first win of the year, with an 8-0 victory over Dayton on Frida afternoon. Lowry played to a 0-0 tie on Saturday afternoon and say its Northern 3A East record even out at 1-1-1.
Lowry is 1-10-1 overall and 0-5 in crossover games against the Northern 3A West.
In the win over Dayton, the Buckaroos’ Jose Avila notched a hat trick and teammate Enrique Armejo added a pair of goals.
Danny Castaneda, Juan Carlos Lopez and Allan Pacheco each had a goal.
Lowry led 3-0 after 40 minutes of action and the Buckaroos added five goals in the second half.
Lowry 0, Fernley 0
Lowry looked to sweep the Lyon County schools on Saturday but Fernley goalie Lucas Messerschmidt was the difference in the contest.
The junior had a number of big saves to prevent the Lowry win.
The Buckaroos dominated much of the game and Avila got off a strong shot that was saved in the 50th minute.
With the ball still near the net, the Buckaroos’ Jesus Guizar got off a shot near the goal that just missed.
Avila had two more good looks midway through the first half and Castaneda had a long shot hit off the top of the bar on the goalie net. In the end, Lowry could not get the winning goal passed Messerschmidt.
“We started playing better this week,” said LHS coach Steve Swanson. “It’s been a rough start to the season. “We dominated the play against Fernley. You have to give their goalie credit; he made some great saves against us.”
Lowry traveled to Spring Creek on Tuesday and results were not available at press time.
Lowry hosts Elko on Saturday at 11:45 a.m. and travels to Truckee on Monday to make up a postponed match from earlier in the year.
