Great Basin Sun writer finishes first in Better Newspaper Contest

The results of the 2022 Nevada Press Foundation Awards of Excellence were announced at the organization’s annual Awards Banquet held last weekend at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino. The contest honors the best in Nevada journalism, advertising, design and photography.

The banquet was emceed by Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist John Katsilometes and included a remembrance of recently slain reporter Jeff German by his Review-Journal investigative reporting colleagues Art Kane, Rhonda Prast and Briana Erickson.

The Great Basin Sun Assistant Editor and Sports Editor Tony Erquiaga took home multiple awards for his extensive coverage of high school prep sports. Erquiaga  won first place for ‘Sports Spot News Story’ for his feature about multi state-champ Jovi Kuskie, and second place for ‘Multiple Photo Essay or Gallery’ for his coverage on state basketball. 

Kane won eight awards in this year’s contest, including Outstanding Journalist of the Year. His “Flawed Discipline” series on management failures in the Henderson Police Department won Story of the Year and also took first place in the Investigative Reporting (Urban) category. He was also part of the Review-Journal teams that won Video of the Year as well as the Freedom of the Press and Community Service categories.

German was posthumously awarded Podcast of the Year, along with Larry Mir, for the second season of the Review-Journal’s “Mobbed Up” podcast. And along with Kane, he was part of the team that won the Freedom of the Press Award and took third place in the Investigative Reporting category for a series on corruption in the Cook County Coroner’s Office.
