Cassinelli wins low medalist honors on home course

When the Lowry High School girls golf team hosted the Northern 3A at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course on Monday, Sept. 26, the Lady Bucks’ Katie Cassinelli came to the course with the mindset of not letting Douglas, the defending state champion have an individual champion.

Even though the Tigers won the tournament with a 349, Cassinelli kept the individual crown in Winnemucca, as she was the low medalist with a career-best round of 78.

“I came into today saying that I wasn’t going to let the Douglas girls win,” Cassinelli. “I wasn’t going to let one of them win on our home course.”

Lowry finished second as a team with a total of 424, South Tahoe was third at 441 and Fernley (452) and Spring Creek (471) rounded out the top five.

Fernley’s Nadia Velasquez was second in the individual standings with a score of 83 and Douglas’ Abby Miller (84) was third.

Lainey Novacek carded a 106 for Lowry, followed by Jordyn Medicine Cloud (115), Kailani Rodriguez (125) and Isabella Bartell (148).

With two regular season tournaments left to be played, Lowry is fourth in the team standings with 30 points.

The Northern 3A does not have a postseason tournament and the three state tournament spots are decided on the final regular season point standings.

Douglas leads with 51 points and South Tahoe (42.5) and Truckee (25.5) are second and third, respectively.

The Northern 3A closes out the regular season on Monday, Oct. 10, in Truckee and Oct. 11 in South Tahoe.
