Buckaroos’ Lara earns runner-up finish at Run the Rubies Elko Invite

The Lowry High School cross country team was busy last week with a pair of meets in Northern Nevada.

Lowry’s Ivan Lara earned a runner-up finish at the Run the Rubies Elko Invitational at Camp Lamoille on Friday, Sept. 30. 

The senior stopped the clock at 19 minutes. 8.1 seconds, while Elko’s Braylon Baggett won the race with a time of 17:36.6.

Elko’s Kyler Evans (19:13.3) and Landon Lenz (19:15.8) were third and fourth, respectively, and Wells’ Gonzalo Roque was fifth at 20:01.5.

Lowry junior Keaton Kenison was 38th in a time of 15:42.2 and freshman Jace Frydendall was 43rd at 27:28.1.

Elko won the team title with 18 points and Spring Creek was second at 53.   

In the girls race, Elko had the top six finishers, including race winner Carly Nielsen at 22:28.3.



Lowry competes at Reed Invitational

To start last week, the Lowry cross country team was in Sparks to compete in the Reed Invitational at Shadow Mountain Park on Tuesday, Sept. 27. 

The meet was postponed earlier in the year due to smoke in the area.

The Northern 3A Regional Championships will be held on the Shadow Mountain Course at the end of October.

Lara was the lone Buckaroo in the varsity boys race and he finished 19th in a time of 19:43.

Reed’s Gabriel Weaver won the race with a time of 17:35 and Reno’s Cael Mattioli was second at 17:49. Spanish Springs’ Peyton Mills (18:00) and Galena’s Spencer Wirshing (18:10) and Jackson Hughes (18:11) rounded out the top five. 

Galena took home the team title, beating Spanish Springs 36-38.

In the JV boys race, Lennox Zebroski had a time of 29:11 for the Buckaroos, followed by Frydendall (30:04) and Kenison (30:30). Galena’s Cameron Edwards won the race with a time of 20:48.

Lowry sophomore Marina Hernandez finished 13th in the JV girls race with a time of 28:22. Bishop Manogue had the top three finishers, including race winner Samantha Tolotti at 23:34. 

Lowry did not have a runner in the varsity girls race, which was won by Galena’s Eleanor Raker in a time of 20:36.

Lowry will be at home on Friday for its annual invitational at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course. Racing begins at 2 p.m.
