Battle Mountain splits with Silver Stage, Yerington

For the first time since the end of August, the Battle Mountain High School volleyball team was back on its home floor.

The Lady Longhorns celebrated homecoming week with matches against Silver Stage and Yerington. Battle Mountain swept the Nighthawks on Friday 25-17, 25-21, 25-20 and lost to Yerington 25-15, 25-14 and 25-14 and are now 3-4 in the Northern 2A and 8-11 overall.

Against Silver Stage, Battle Mountain picked up an ace from Emely Farias and a kill by Christina Holley to keep the set tied at 3-3.

The set was tied three more times when the Lady Longhorns went in front 9-8 on a kill by Holley. That started a 6-0 run, which included two aces by Shea Jones and another kill by Holley to make the score 14-8.

After a tip in the open net by Holley and a kill from Bailey Elderkin, the lead ballooned to 22-10. Battle Mountain won the opening set after a serving error by Silver Stage.

The Nighthawks came back with four of the first five points in the second set, with the only point for the home squad coming off a kill by Olivia Lemaire. Battle Mountain came back to take the lead at 5-4 after consecutive aces by Heidy Amezcua.

The lead would go back-and-forth, with Battle Mountain going back in front after two straight aces by Jones.

The Lady Longhorns’ advantage grew to 19-16, but a missed serve led to three straight points by Silver Stage to tie the set at 19.

Battle Mountain then reeled off the next three points off a tip by Holley, a point by Farias and a block by Holley. Holley, a senior, finished off the set with back-to-back kills.

In the final set, Battle Mountain picked up early kills from Lilliana Haney, Galileah Benavidez and Holley and two aces from Jones to build a 10-5 advantage. The lead shrunk to 17-15 at one time, when Battle Mountain scored the next three points capped off by an ace from Haney. Lemaire closed out the match with a kill.

Holley had five of Battle Mountain’s 15 kills, with Benavidez adding three and Haney, Jones and Lemaire two each. Jones and Holley each had four aces and Amezcua contributed two.

Lemaire and Holley each had two blocks and Amezcua and Farias had six and three assists, respectively.

Battle Mountain is off this weekend and hosts North Tahoe on Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 4 p.m. The Lady Longhorns are back at home on Friday, Oct. 14, to play Pershing County at 5 p.m. and Coral Academy on Saturday, Oct. 15, at noon.
