The Pershing County High School wrestling team hopes to have higher numbers this year. Coach Mike Brooks says 11 athletes showed up for practices last week.
He’s not sure how many will commit to the physically and mentally demanding sport.
“It’s a relatively inexperienced group but the fresh faces make it fun to build from the ground up,” said Brooks. “It takes a ton of dedication.”
Even with small numbers, the Mustangs excelled last season. Devin Moura and Wyatt Hughes were both zone champions in their weight ranges. Moura graduated last spring with seven seasons of wrestling, counting middle school.
He finished as a three-time state runner-up. Hughes returns as a sophomore hoping to build on a solid foundation.
He’ll have his chance soon. The coaches are finalizing the schedule but the first meet will be Saturday, Dec. 3, at Douglas High School in Minden.
Pershing County will travel to Winnemucca on Dec, 9-10 for the Cody Louk Invitational and will also take a group to Reno for the McQueen JV tournament on Dec, 10.
The Mustangs host their tournament on Dec. 17.
The Northern 2A Regional Championship will be held in Lovelock on Feb. 4 and the NIAA State Championships will be in Winnemucca on Feb. 10-11.
