Obituary: Jason R Franklin “Jay”

Jason Franklin, a loving husband, father, brother, son, and friend was born May 2, 1974, in Bell Flower California to Sue Zimmerman and Boyd Franklin.

Jason unexpectedly passed away on November 1, 2022.

Jason spent the first two years of his life in Covina California. His family then moved to Reno where he grew up and he even attended school with his future wife Daylene where they were square dancing partners in the 5th grade.

He graduated from Hug Highschool in 1992. During high school, he participated in the varsity ski team and worked all four years.

In early 1994 Jason decided he wanted a relationship with Daylene, and it took no time for her to realize he was her soulmate and best friend.

Daylene and Jason were married in 1999 and ran off in a beautiful horse and carriage. They shared 28 years together and two beautiful daughters.

Everyone that knew Jason, knew that Daylene and the girls were his entire world and he was a very loving and involved husband and father.

From a very young age, Jason knew he wanted a career in law enforcement.

In 1995, he graduated from the High Sierra Police Academy in Reno then one year later was hired at Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department in Winnemucca Nevada where he worked for 9 ½ years.

Jason then transferred to Highway Patrol for just under a year before becoming Sergeant of Nevada Division of Investigations, then promoted to Lieutenant.

Jason ultimately retired in 2021; however, returned to work part-time with the Winnemucca Police Department as a reserve motorcycle officer and absolutely loved it.

He spent his entire law enforcement career serving and protecting Winnemucca, Humboldt County, and all of northern Nevada.

He is proceeded in death by his grandparents Joyce and Chuck Woodard, Boyd and Helen Franklin and his mother and father-in-law, Rick and Kathie Varnum, and additional father figure, Stan Rorex.

He is survived by his wife Daylene, daughters Amanda and Kailey, mother Sue (John) Zimmerman, father Boyd (Diana) Franklin, sister Kristi (Mike, Mason) Varner, step sister Paige (Striker) Jensen, step brother Jon (Erika) Zimmerman, his friends, and all his brothers and sisters of law enforcement.

A Celebration of Life to honor Jason will be held on Sunday, December 4, 2022, from 12:00 – 4:00 pm at the Boys and Girls Club of Winnemucca, Nevada located at 1973 Whitworth Way, Winnemucca, NV 89445.

The family is asking, in leu of flowers, for donations to the Jason Franklin Memorial Fund in which the money will be used to help his daughters with their college expenses.

You can donate to @JFranklinMemorialFund on Venmo (code needed 1842) or the local Nevada State Bank.
