Fatal car crash on Interstate 80 West of Winnemucca

On Friday November 4, 2022, at approximately 8:30 P.M. Pacific Time, Troopers with the Nevada State Police, Highway Patrol Division, responded to a report of a vehicle crash on Interstate 80 near state mile marker 165 (county mile marker 1 in Humboldt County). 


This location is approximately 13 miles west of Winnemucca.


Preliminary investigation determined that a white Nissan hatchback was stopped in the eastbound right travel lane of Interstate 80, with none of the vehicle’s lighting activated. 


A gray Ram pick-up truck was traveling eastbound on Interstate 80 in the right travel lane toward the Nissan. 


The front of the Ram struck the rear of the Nissan causing both vehicles to drive off the left side of the roadway into the center median.


Unfortunately, the driver of the Nissan, David Mecum (age 53) of Spring Creek, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene. 


The driver of the Ram was transported from the scene for medical treatment.


The crash is being investigated by the Nevada Highway Patrol Northern Command East Multi-Disciplinary Investigation and Reconstruction Team (M.I.R.T.).
